Paul Smith Engineering

Established in August 1998, the business initially operated from a small workshop at Golden Green, a village to the north of Tonbridge. However, in April 2011, I transferred my operation to its present home at the Gaza Trading Estate in Hildenborough.

In 1991 I was apprenticed as a toolmaker with Complec (toolmakers for the plastics industry) of Tunbridge Wells, and took my City & Guilds Certificates I, II and III before going on to gain a Higher National Certificate in Production and Mechanical Engineering. I later moved to another Tunbridge Wells firm, S.H.Muffett Ltd, engineers and during my time there was engaged in making prototype components and in the conversion of machines to produce them.

As well as running the business I have long been interested in vintage pedal cycles and have restored and raced several Ordinarys (Penny Farthings). Another of my interests is vintage cars, particularly the Grand Prix Salmsons of the 1920's. Inevitably these passions have crept into my precision engineering business and many vintage cars and bicycles have been rebuilt with my assistance, not to mention other vehicles including traction engines. The restoration and re-manufacture of worn-out or broken/damaged components is one of my specialities.
